Well first of all, read the description..."On June 18, 2008, four days before his death, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC announced that Carlin would be the 2008 honoree...which was awarded on November 10, 2008. Carlin thus became the award's first posthumous recipient." This information is also readily available on Wikipedia and from other news sources.

He was dead at the time. This was shot in November, he died in June. They announced that he would be winning this right before he died, but the ceremony took place afterwards.
